Catheter Care for Patients
This information will help you take care of your urine (Foley) while you are at home.
- Have a urine tube (a small, flexible tube) placed in your bladder to drain your urine (pee). Trapped inside one of you is a balloon full of water.
- You need to clean your catheter, change your water supply bags, and wash your water bags daily.
- You can see some blood or urine when a catheter enters your body, especially when you are walking or moving your bowels (pooping). This is normal, as long as there is urine pulling into the water bag. If not, call your healthcare provider.
- While you have your catheter, drink 1 to 2 glasses of the liquids every two hours.
How do you clean a catheter?
Wash the catheter well utilizing cooled, bubbled water and a gentle fluid cleanser. Flush well with cooled, bubbled water to eliminate all hints of cleanser. Flick the catheter dry. Try not to contact the end which goes into your urethra.
